SOTA Challenge 2026: Focus on 2m/70cm SSB and CW

The Summits on the Air (SOTA) Management Team has announced a global challenge for 2026 to promote activity in SSB and CW.

As activity on 2 m and 70 cm has shifted significantly towards FM and digital modes in recent years, this year’s challenge places the spotlight on SSB and CW.

Key rules and points:

• Period: 1 January to 31 December 2026.
• Modes: SSB and CW only.
• Bands: 144 MHz (2 m) and 432 MHz (70 cm).
• Data exchange: As with VHF contests, the exchange of the 6-digit QTH locator is mandatory, as scoring is based on distance.
• Scoring system: Activators: 1 point per kilometre for each QSO with a unique call sign (per peak), multiplied by the number of peaks activated.
• Chasers: 1 point per kilometre for each QSO with a unique call sign (per peak), multiplied by the number of peaks chased.

The management team emphasises that no high-end equipment is required to take part; even simple transverters or all-mode transceivers such as the FT-817/857 or IC-705 are sufficient. In Switzerland and Austria, there are already lively discussions taking place on the HB9SOTA forum and within the ÖVSV to coordinate strategies for long-distance contacts from the Alps.
