22. March 2024TOP NEWS / USKADeutsche Version: Der neue USKA Präsident sagt: Von der USKA profitieren alle Funkamateure Version française: Le nouveau président de l’USKA déclare : tous les radioamateurs profitent de l’USKA Versione italiana: Il nuovo presidente dell’USKA afferma: Tutti i radioamatori traggono beneficio dall’USKA  English version: The new USKA President says: All radio amateurs benefit from the USKA Editorial HBradio 2/2024 All radio amateurs benefit from the USKA In the past, there was no question: at the latest when a candidate had obtained his radio license from DG PTT or OFCOM, he joined the USKA. The main reason was the QSL service. Amateur radio without access to the QSL service was unthinkable back then. Today, the QSL service has lost its importance. Since connection confirmations for diplomas can also be submitted electronically, QSL cards are no longer absolutely necessary. In fact, the number of QSL cards issued by the USKA is constantly decreasing. However, the USKA stands for much more than just the QSL service. Amateur radio lives from the fact that it is regulated worldwide under international law. Ensuring this is a huge task. The highest body that decides which frequencies we are allowed to use is the World Radio Conference WRC. The last one took place in Dubai from 20.11.2023 to 15.12.2023, i.e. for 4 weeks. Imagine that: A committee of around 3600 participants with representatives from the 193 countries of the International Telecommunication Union ITU decides on which frequencies amateur radio may be operated. Even OFCOM, with its delegation of around 15 participants, was just one country among many. However, the IARU, the international umbrella organization of all national amateur radio clubs, was also present in Dubai. In recent years, it has made a huge effort, also with the support of the USKA, to keep future restrictions on our 23 cm band within limits. The band is primarily intended for radio navigation (GPS etc.) and we radio amateurs are secondary users. At the WRC 2019 in Sharm El-Sheikh, they even wanted to take away the 2 m band from us, a band that is, of course, exclusively allocated to radio amateurs. Supporting the preservation of our bands at all levels in the best possible way is of the utmost importance However, the USKA also deals with many other challenging tasks that can only be solved at national level: It has two formal meetings a year with OFCOM to discuss ongoing issues: new frequencies (e.g. 4 m band), new operating modes, coordination of relay frequencies, interference to our frequency bands (EMC), new examination procedures, satellite uses, etc. It deals with building laws and antenna licenses, with questions of radiation exposure (NISV), and generally with the best possible legal framework for amateur radio It endeavors to make amateur radio known and popular at schools and other events (Tec-Days, TUN-Bern, -Basel, -Lucerne etc.) It seeks cooperation with related leisure activities such as makers, fab labs, the Lora community, etc. to get them interested in amateur radio too It is generally concerned about the next generation in amateur radio However, the local sections are just as important as the national USKA. This is where the real amateur radio life takes place. They are responsible for the practical, operational part: Club events, further training, participation in contests, equipment and antenna construction, etc. In Switzerland, the sections are independent associations with their own statutes and legal status. This is somewhat special compared to other countries, but is in keeping with the federalist system in Switzerland. Anyone who is interested in amateur radio should therefore belong to at least two associations in Switzerland: The national association USKA, to show solidarity in supporting the unique, worldwide privileges of amateur radio, and to ensure national recognition At least one of the 34 sections that corresponds to his personal interests and where he feels comfortable among colleagues. Collective members are also a welcome addition to the amateur radio club landscape. They usually represent very specific interest groups, be it in terms of radio activities, professional communities or other commonalities. However, they have no voice in the USKA and are therefore no substitute for membership in a USKA section. I have officially been your President since the Assembly of Delegates on February 24, 2024. I am very keen to deepen and intensify cooperation between the USKA and the sections in the future. In addition, it is important to adapt the organization and administration of the USKA to today’s digital world and to meet the increased needs and expectations of our members. I am looking forward to taking on this task for the coming years because it is important to me that amateur radio will still be recognized as a meaningful volunteer activity in 50 years’ time, and that it will enjoy significance and recognition in society: be it as a supplement to technical training, as a last communication reserve in extreme disaster situations, or just for the fun of not only using radio technology, but also understanding it. Amateur radio is diverse, instructive and fascinating and brings many long-lasting social contacts among like-minded people. Thank you very much for your support of the activities of the USKA, in your sections and in the collective members. I would like to thank each and every USKA member for their many years of loyalty. 21. May 2024AllgemeinDeutsche Version: Ausfall Webserver und Mail-Service Stand 21.5.2024 Version française: Panne du serveur web et du service de messagerie Situation au 21.5.2024 Versione italiana: Interruzione del server web e del servizio di posta elettronica a partire dal 21 maggio 2024 English version: Web server and mail service outage as at 21.5.2024 Web server and mail service outage as at 21.5.2024 The odyssey with METANET has come to an end. We have now moved the uska.ch website to a new provider. This was a complicated undertaking, because the old provider METANET really never missed a chance to prove that it no longer had its situation under control. After we received a general block on our entire subscription for no plausible reason on Whit Sunday, we had to take the step of moving immediately after all. We actually wanted to do this calmly, but the total lockdown left us with no other option. Of course, this was always done in close consultation with the Board of Directors and the GPK. See: https://support.metanet.ch/statusMessage-499.html As we no longer even had access to our data and the support team was not impressed by deadlines, we first had to carry out a trial migration based on the last complete backup, which we download daily, before finally carrying out the final migration. As we work with our private upload rates, this takes a few hours with 16 GB of compressed data. As soon as this was done, even the domain transfer was tedious and slow (“within one working day” we received the transfer codes). Finally, we managed to make the website available again this afternoon, May 21, around 6 pm. The next steps are as follows: Access to the email inboxes is currently available somehow. These are still running at METANET. As long as they are running, we’ll come up with a clever strategy. However, it may well be that we have to make a hard cut and the contents of the mailboxes will expire. A migration of the mailboxes is hardly conceivable for us given the state of the provider METANET. The log server will also have to be migrated. However, this should not be a problem as soon as we can download the data. Here we have relied on METANET’s backup procedure. Still on METANET As a web editor, I have no intention of disparaging a service provider. However, since the beginning of the year, we have had to put up with a lot of tedious support emails, some of which were even outrageously worded. It was difficult to work constructively with this provider. However, since the blocking on Saturday/Sunday, the ignorant and brazen approach of METANET support, and METANET’s complete incompetence in getting their own servers under control, they have lost all goodwill with me. They even blocked us again today, even though the domain had already been moved and the web hosting was deactivated. In my opinion, this company is totally overwhelmed by the situation at the moment. What a shame for this former Swiss company. On behalf of the USKA, I would also like to thank the many offers of help, which I do not want to name here now, so that these people are not overwhelmed with requests 😉 Furthermore, of course, the webmaster HB9FEE and the board for their work over Pentecost. 1. April 2024Allgemein / FT8Deutsche Version: MH370 – Suche wird möglicherweise mit Hilfe von WSPR fortgesetzt Version française: MH370 – Les recherches pourraient reprendre avec l’aide du WSPR Versione italiana: MH370 – Le ricerche potrebbero proseguire con l’aiuto del WSPR English version: MH370 – Search may continue with the help of WSPR MH370 – Search may continue with the help of WSPR The search for the missing aircraft of flight MH370 may be resumed. On March 8, 10 years ago, the Boeing 777-200ER disappeared from radar on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. There were 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board. The Australian TV program “60 Minutes Australia” now reports that the Malaysian government could renew its plans to search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. Previously, the US technology company Ocean Infinity had proposed a “no find, no cost” search. Ocean Infinity plans to search the seabed again, extending the area of the first search from 2018.Compared to then, new clues have emerged that could actually lead to the crash site.Former US aeronautical engineer Richard Godfrey used historical WSPR signals from radio amateurs to reconstruct a possible flight route that deviated from the planned flight path and did not lead to China, but apparently into the Indian Ocean, where it came to a tragic end in the vastness of the sea.Godfrey has published his case studies on https://www.mh370search.com. 60 Minutes Australia quoted Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke as saying that he would first have to get permission from his government to resume the search. The TV format recently published an update on the search under the title “MH370 mystery continues: Will the doomed plane ever be found?” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y4OqwBLzog. Two years ago, 60 Minutes Australia published the article “Finding MH370: New breakthrough could finally solve missing flight mystery” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq-d4Kl8Xh4 about Godfrey’s research into using WSPR. The core statements of the latter article (in German) are summarized and quoted in the article “Führen WSPR-Signale zur Absturzstelle von MH370?” in CQ DL 4/22, p. 49. The South African association SARL is asking for active participation, and this is certainly a welcome opportunity to add a few DXCC countries to its collection. The SARL homepage http://www.sarl.org.za/ is difficult to access. It is therefore welcome that they have made the contest rules available to us. 12. February 2024AllgemeinDeutsche Version: UNESCO World Radio Day am 13. Februar 2024 – “Ein Jahrhundert der Information, Unterhaltung und Bildung” Version française: Journée mondiale de la radio de l’UNESCO le 13 février 2024 – “Un siècle d’information, de divertissement et d’éducation”. Versione italiana: Giornata mondiale della radio dell’UNESCO il 13 febbraio 2024 – “Un secolo di informazione, intrattenimento ed educazione” English version: UNESCO World Radio Day on February 13, 2024 – “A century of information, entertainment and education” UNESCO World Radio Day on February 13, 2024 – “A century of information, entertainment and education” UNESCO World Radio Day WRD will take place on February 13 with the motto “A century of information, entertainment and education”. It can be assumed that there will be broad media coverage, especially on the radio. UNESCO’s aim in dedicating a day to radio is to promote a simple and inexpensive mass medium that is particularly suited to reaching remote communities and vulnerable people. This day should also be a good opportunity to reflect on and recognize the media and its role in the development of society. Radio amateurs help to communicate and keep alive the technical knowledge of equipment and the behavior of electromagnetic waves. For example, the EA Digital Federation has activated nine special event stations from February 9 to 18. The stations will be active on various bands and operating modes, including Fonie, CW and Digimodes. Operating times and information on the special QSLs can be found at https://www.fediea.org/news/?news=20240213. World Radio Day was first celebrated in 2012 after being proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was subsequently adopted as an international day by the United Nations General Assembly. [...]

We will be able to use the first-class OK5Z contest station for 7 days. The station is located near Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The 3* hotel in Náměšť nadOslavou is only a few kilometers by car from the radio station. Transportation to and from the hotel is ideally by car or via car sharing for the other participants. The hotel costs for one person/per night, including breakfast, are around CZK 1,200 (= ~ CHF 48). There are also other hotels nearby if a different category is required. There is the individual possibility to participate in the event for one, several days or the whole week. OM as a companion is of course very welcome. Our activities are accompanied by a professional video cameraman and photographer and recorded on modern data carriers. In addition to the pure radio activities (a maximum of five YLs can operate simultaneously on different bands/modes), we have also planned workshops for the first time: How do I set up a station for digi-modes (e.g. RTTY) and how do I operate in an RTTY contest? How do I operate the Fox/Hound mode (FT8) in DXpedition traffic?specialties? We build a 20m dipole together, which every YL can take home How do I solder an N/PL connector to a coaxial cable? The hosts will also give us selected presentations of their DXpeditions to Africa. SOTA (summits on the air), flora and fauna (OKFF) activations will round off the varied program. We assume that there will be something for everyone. We will provide information about the further development of the event sporadically in suitable media such as the USKA website, Facebook, Instagram and QRZ. I will gladly accept registrations at hb9fpm@uska.ch (Eva Thiemann, HB9FPM/OK3QE). I am also available to answer any questions you may have. A small selection from the stunning antenna set-up: 6el-15m, on 22m height 3el-40m, on 26m height 5el-10m, on 29m height Ultrabeam for WARC bands, on 25m height 27m vertical antenna for 160m Half Q for 80m + inverted V 8x Beverage antennas for reception of the lower bands Invitation: Invitation for YL Event OL88YL Dt.
