Markus HB9GXM, Bernard HB9ALH and Urs HB9BKT will continue to represent the USKA until 23 September 2026 at the Parkhotel Schönbrunn in Vienna. Since 19 September, the Austrian Experimental Radio Association (OeVSV) has been hosting the delegates attending the General Conference of IARU Region 1. This region comprises around 100 countries and territories across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North Asia.

​In the sumptuous surroundings of the Parkhotel Schönbrunn, participants are discussing the future of amateur radio. Whilst tourists stroll through the Habsburg Gardens outside, the radio amateurs inside are fine-tuning frequency allocations and regulatory frameworks.

​Radio operation in the digital age calls for clear rules. Unilateral national initiatives are detrimental to the hobby, as radio frequencies know no national borders. That is why representatives in the working groups are striving to reach compromises. Whether it’s emergency radio or technological progress, the delegates’ agenda is packed. After the negotiations, there is little time left for Wiener schnitzel; after all, the motions from the regional associations are up for discussion and a vote.
