A call sign (or callsign) is assigned to every licensed radio amateur by the licensing authority. The callsign is personal and is only valid for as long as the radio amateur is alive and licensed. After a waiting period, the callsign expires and is reassigned. In Switzerland, OFCOM issues the callsigns.
The callsign consists of a country-specific identifier (assigned by the ITU, see ARRL – ITU country list) and an identifier (assigned by the authority). The authorities assign this individually according to their own system. Payment and letter components can contain regional and license class information. In Switzerland, callsigns are assigned according to the following scheme:
Prefix | Use |
HB0 | Liechtenstein (not within OFCOM’s area of responsibility) |
HB1-2, HB4-8 | Contest callsigns and special callsigns |
HB3 | Beginner license class, followed by an X or Y and two further letters, e.g. HB3YAA |
HB9 | usually sections, clubs and contest callsigns, followed by 1-2 letters, e.g. HB9A, but there are also some older assignments to OM’s who have already received the license some time ago |
HB9 | CEPT license class, followed by three letters |
HB | followed by 2 digits and letters are special call signs. See also USKA club callsigns. e.g. HB90ABC or HB65ABC |
HE | Listening amateur callsign, issued by the USKA to USKA members without a license |
The callsign is used in the form
prefix – callsign – suffix
A prefix in the form of a country identifier is prefixed if the radio amateur is located in the country concerned and if the licensing authority has expressly prescribed this in the form.
A suffix is generally optional, but is also mandatory in certain contest situations and describes the current location or use of the station. The suffix can generally be chosen freely. The following suffixes are common internationally:

Die Bezüge zum Amateurfunk in der Serie haben Tim Allen so interessiert, das er jetzt seine Lizenz als KK6OTD gemacht hat. |
