EmComm Conference 2026: Emergency radio reaches the last mile
On Saturday, 10 October 2026, the emergency radio community will gather in Brütten. For the first time, the USKA is specifically opening the conference to representatives of public authorities.
A widespread power cut quickly paralyses normal communications. When landlines, mobile networks and the internet fail, the classic emergency radio scenario comes into play. On Saturday 10 October 2026, the USKA will host this year’s EmComm Conference in Brütten.
Expanded concept
The concept significantly broadens the scope. For the first time, the event is aimed equally at licensed radio amateurs and representatives of public authorities and emergency services.
Authorities involved
A separate block of presentations is on the programme for representatives of the authorities. Technical jargon is kept to a minimum. Dominik Schwerzmann, HB3YQP, Head of the Office for Civil Protection, Civil Defence and Military Affairs of the Canton of Zug, will provide first-hand accounts of the practical cooperation between the authorities and radio amateurs.
Special emergency radio rack
A key technical focus is on the so-called ‘last mile’ to the public. Connecting the civilian population in the event of a crisis does not necessarily require highly complex shortwave stations. General-purpose radio systems such as CB radio and PMR-446 are integrated directly into the operational concept. A specially designed emergency radio rack (see picture) is demonstrated, which serves precisely these interfaces.
Analogue and digital
In the morning, specialist talks on current transmission methods are on the programme for amateur radio operators. The afternoon is devoted to practical sessions in the outdoor area. Demonstrations will be held on site, including Winlink-2000 via shortwave and VHF, digital MESH networks via AREDN, and voice communications via regional VHF and UHF repeaters.
Members of the authorities will be given a guided tour of the Brütten emergency radio container. In addition, various Seletions and emergency radio groups will be showcasing their mobile equipment. Anyone wishing to experience data connections for emails and images under field conditions will be able to see the equipment in action on site.
Amateur radio: More than just a hobby
The conference sends a clear message. Emergency radio is not an isolated hobby, but a structured link for civil protection in the event of an emergency. Participation offers radio operators and members of the authorities the opportunity to network and discuss operational scenarios realistically.
