Why EmComm

When the electricity supply, mobile networks and the internet fail, radio is often the only option left.

Radio amateurs can establish communication links independently of the existing infrastructure, thereby supporting the authorities and emergency services.  This capability makes amateur radio an important backup communication resource in emergency situations. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or widespread power cuts can render standard telecommunications systems inoperable for days or even weeks.

Radio amateurs act, in a sense, as the ‘emergency reserve’ for communications. When standard means of communication fail, they can establish connections in a very short space of time, independent of the existing infrastructure, thereby strengthening the resilience of crisis management.
