Definition

In amateur radio, QRP refers to transmitting at low transmit power. The term derives from the abbreviation for ‘Reduce transmit power’ in the Q code. The challenge of QRP operation lies in covering the greatest possible distances with the lowest possible transmit power — the choice of antenna and location is therefore of particular importance. QRP operation requires a wide range of skills to be successful on the shortwave bands.

DIY is almost inextricably linked to QRP operation. Many QRPers devote themselves primarily or exclusively to it. Operating their equipment is of less importance to them. They are perfectly content if they can have a few leisurely QSOs with it. They are not interested in DX or even breaking through pile-ups. Although building your own QRP equipment can be fascinating, this is not the subject of my article.
