Q-code and abbreviations
The Q-key, international CW abbreviations and the NATO spelling alphabet — radio abbreviations for efficient voice and telegraphy operations.
The Q-key
The Q-key, also known as the Q-code, is used by radio services to transmit standard messages unambiguously. Originally developed for telegraphy, it is now also used in other modes of operation — for example, in voice radio. The official meanings of the Q-groups sometimes differ significantly from their everyday use in amateur radio.
In telegraphy, Q-codes save a considerable amount of time, as each letter must be transmitted individually. The codes commonly used today were introduced in 1912 by the International Radiotelegraph Convention and have since been expanded to over 250 codes. Each code consists of three letters beginning with ‘Q’ and may be supplemented by additional information.
Urs Hadorn HB9ABO has compiled a comprehensive collection of all known Q-codes — available as a 28-page PDF file for download: [DE] Q-Code – alle Q-Gruppen (HB9ABO, 28 Seiten, PDF).
CW abbreviations
Q-codes are not available for much of the content in a message. For this reason, a wide range of other, internationally standardised abbreviations are used. Ingo Meyer DK3RED maintains a practical overview on qrp4fun.de.
Spelling alphabet
In radio communication, a spelling alphabet is the best way to clearly transmit one’s own call sign. Aviation and NATO use the standardised set of words Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta … — the NATO-Aviation-ICAO alphabet. It was developed to be understood internationally; each letter is assigned a word whose sound cannot be confused with any other. Making up your own terms is not recommended.
