Bavarian Order of Merit for Prof. Dr. Ulrich L. Rohde, DJ2LR

On 23 July 2025, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Ulrich L. Rohde, DJ2LR, received the Bavarian Order of Merit from Minister President Dr. Markus Söder. This is considered a ‘sign of grateful recognition for outstanding scientific achievements and services to the Free State of Bavaria and the Bavarian people’. With his life’s work, Rohde is one of Bavaria’s outstanding scientific ambassadors to the world.

Minister President Söder praised Rohde: “An award for a universal genius: the Bavarian Order of Merit for Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dr. h.c. mult. Ulrich Rohde! The honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences has achieved outstanding achievements with the highest intelligence on so many levels in science and teaching, in business and in the promotion of young scientists. His name is known worldwide in the field of high-frequency and microwave technology.”

When Prof. Rohde was awarded honorary membership of the DARC e.V. in October 2023, his services to amateur radio in Germany and the club were highlighted. His ‘unwavering and extraordinary commitment’ as well as his ‘dedication and long-standing, generous support for the association,’ which were attested to on this occasion, are also an expression of the social and societal obligations he has taken on.

In the library of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, one of the largest and oldest scientific academies in Germany with such well-known members as Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg and others, he gave a lecture on ‘GLOBAL MARKETS, GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY AND GLOBAL STUDENTS’. He emphasised how important he believes an amateur radio licence is for students and technicians: ‘Here, you have to deal in depth with the entire field of radio technology, from propagation conditions, antennas and signal processing to loudspeakers, and you can gain practical experience.’

Web editor’s note: DJ2LR ‘Om Uli’, born in Munich in 1940, can often be found on FT8 as N1UL. He has been supporting his friends in Davos for many years and has provided significant financial support for the stations around HB9HAI, or rather financed them in full.
